Getting to Grindelwald for your skiing or walking holiday is very straighforward. Here you will find a selection of links that we hope will make travelling easier.
Grindelwald is approx 3 hrs drive from Geneva (205km), 2 ½ hrs drive from Zurich, (195km), about 2hrs from Basel (175km) and only 1 hrs. drive from Berne airport (67km).
You can either choose to land in Calais or Oostende. The channel tunnel from Folkestone runs approximately four shuttles per hour and you can book via www.eurotunnel.co.uk/ukcP3Main/. Frequent ferries and catamarans run between Dover and Calais, (www.stenalink.co.uk, www.hoverspeed.co.uk, www.seafrance.com). Hoverspeed also run between Dover and Oostende.
The Swiss border is roughly 850km from the Channel coast and with an early start and clear roads you could be in Grindelwald for a late supper. A route planner is available via www.viamichelin.com.
Eurostar to Paris and then on to Grindelwald via Berne and Interlaken. From Geneva airport (see below) take the express train to Interlaken via Berne (2hrs 50 mins). Zurich via Berne to Interlaken (2hrs 30mins) and Basel to Interlaken only 2 hrs. The train from Interlaken, up the spectacular Lütschen river valley right into the centre of the village, takes approx. 35 mins from Interlaken. Your chalet will then be only 100m away. Easyjet www.easyjet.com fly from London, Bristol Nottingham, Bournemouth, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Newcastle to Geneva and from London and Liverpool to Basel. Flybe www.flybe.com fly from Southampton Bournemouth, Exeter, Norwich and Birmingham to Geneva, and during the winter season, to Berne. BA flies from London to Geneva, Zurich and Basel www.ba.com. Swiss Air also fly into Zurich from London. Blue Island Airways has begun operating a new service from Bournemouth and Southampton to Geneva and Zurich www.blueislands.com
Car hire
If hiring a car from the airport there are motorways from Zurich, approx 210km, Basel, approx 166km and Geneva, approx 236km via Berne and Spiez , followed by a good quality “A” road from Interlaken straight to Grindelwald. Journey time is approx. 3 hours from Geneva and 2.5 hrs from Zurich and Basel. It is best to hire a car from the UK as it is generally more expensive to hire on arrival. Finding Chalet Alpstein:
By car
Drive up towards the centre of the village. You will pass the Hotel Regina on your right and then immediately the train station on your left. You will then pass the main open bus terminal and car park. Take the next road on your right which runs down beside the car park and is sign posted 'P' Sports Zentrum. Follow this road as it turns to the left as if entering the underground car-park. Chalet Alpstein is the last chalet on the right. Please park at the top outside the front door.
On foot from the train station
From the train station cross over the main road and walk diagonally across the main bus terminal and car park. Walk down the little hill towards the lower part of the sports centre (the big square building in front of you).
